Hitchcock set the standards for suspense with Rear WIndow, his use of camera angles, point of view and manipulation of time is used today. Arguably considered his finest film- today it is generated almost a cult following with classic film enthusiasts (and James Stewart fans).
If that wasn’t reason enough to watch it- major eye candy for the fashion savvy viewer: Grace Kelly (ie the Princess of Monaco) wears swoon-worthy outfit after another – and makes us all wish hand gloves with cocktail dresses where still a thing.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
One of the more well known classic films- Audrey Hepburn with the help of stylist Givenchy created history- with a wardrobe that has since then become iconic- and can be seen everywhere nowadays from bridal shower themes to halloween costumes.. you may not know the film but you absoloutely know the dress. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is the ultimate girls movie night choice.
Kathrine Hepburn almost single handedly changed the roles women play in film. At a time where women where defined by the male protagonist (love interest, Mother, Sister etc) Her fierce characters and outspokeness on the womens front won over the hearts of America and created a new frontier for women actors.
Philadelphia Story is iconic- I cannot tell you how many times its been redone. But the original is always best oui?
While watching, be sure to pay due admiration to Cary Grants chin dimple (iconic in its own right)
His Girl Friday
Known for its witty dialog, strong female character and hats- this is your go to for easy viewing and just may be responsible for having you quit your respective career path and pursuing journalism.
To be honest- Gilda is probably my personal favorite- as films go- if His Girl Friday was a comforting meal- Gilda would be a decedent cake. Fabulous wardrobe, extravagant settings, passionate acting.. the whole film reads like rich, glittery, decadent gateau . Be forwarned-you’ve got to be in the right mood to watch Gilda. So if your looking for dramatic lighting, gunplay, and the most fabulous hair toss to rule the history of film.. Look no further. Gilda’s your girl.
